Easy Care Packages to Share Some Love

Every year, I try to be a better friend. I try to spend more time with my friends, be there for them when they need me, and keep in constant communication, even if I can’t make it out to see them.

It’s hard to juggle life – work, marriage, family, friends, and of course, yourself.

But there are simple gestures that don’t take much time that can make a friend’s day or help comfort a loved one who needs a little extra support.

Sometimes we think that we have to do these grand gestures to show that we are there for someone. In reality, all it takes is a text, a phone call, or a hand-written note to show that we care.

And luckily, we have apps like Facetime, Skype, and texting that let us stay in touch with friends and family even from afar. So really, what I’m trying to say, is that there’s no excuse to fall out of touch with someone – we have all the tools at our fingertips to communicate.

However, when a friend or loved one is going through a tough time in their lives (perhaps they’re sick, just got laid off, or broke up with someone), that’s when it’s time to step up to the plate and be there.

And it can be tough to do this when we’re all so busy and caught up in our daily lives. We become crippled thinking, “Well, I feel bad just sending a text, but I can’t make it over to their home to see them!”

That’s where today’s idea comes into play: a simple care package that shows we care that takes minimal time, but will mean a lot to someone. I know it would mean a lot to me if a friend came over and brought this!

Grab two mason jars and fill one with about 1 cup of milk of choice (I like almond or cashew milk) and fill the other one with fruit and granola. I used the Classic Granola by Bob’s Red Mill, cubed peaches, and blueberries. Bring this over to your friend’s (or loved one’s) place and sit down with them for a healthy, easy, thoughtful breakfast or afternoon pick me up. Just make sure to bring bowls and spoons too or make sure your friend has them at their place!

You can even bring this into work early for a coworker and have a little pow-wow at your desks. Perhaps you’ve noticed that a coworker friend is especially stressed out lately or having issues at home or in their relationship. Something like this easy ‘care package’ will go a long way.

And of course, always keep it healthy. Bringing someone sugary treats may be comforting and delicious, but it’ll leave that person feeling lethargic and not in a better mood after you leave.

I encourage everyone to join me and make a simple care package for a friend or loved one who may need a little extra support this week or month. Perhaps it’s this granola, fruit & milk package or something else that makes sense for that particular person. Whatever it may be, take the time!

We all could benefit from slowing down – I know I could! Hope this inspired some of you today!

  • I LOVE this Ally! It would be wonderful to have a few "freezer friendly" recipes for "care package" meals for friends going through a prolonged difficult time--any suggestions?
  • What a lovely idea. Thanks for the inspiration.
  • I always thought that bringing meals over was mainly for new babies and life crises - but a friend brought me a meal the other night just because she knew this was a really busy week for my husband and I. It was so thoughtful, and it really meant so much to me - this is a great idea!
  • Hi Ali, I love what you do and you are an inspiration to me and many others. I love your idea except for the granola part. Bobs Red Mill classic granola has added sugar. Why not stick with just whole grain rolled oats for a truly healthy choice? There is sweetness in the fruit already?. Thanks!
    • To each their own, Bea! If that works for you, go with it!
