Vegan Carrot Dogs with Spiralized Toppings (Three Ways!)

Vegan carrot dogs, meet Inspiralized.

Inspiralized readers, meet these vegan carrot dogs.

Seriously, I could not be more excited for summer to hit so I can grill these carrots and slather them in barbecue sauce.

I can’t wait to see all of your Instagram shots of these carrot dogs (make sure you #inspiralized, always – I look at the hashtag every single day, it’s one of the best parts of my day!)

But, before I get to these recipes, I want to address the insane negativity that came through my Instagram when I initially teased this recipe. I know I shouldn’t dwell on the bad, but I think it’s time, as a blogger, I addressed it.

I’m a happy person. Sure, I have my days when I’m just not feelin’ it, but for the most part, I’m happy. When I received my first negative comment on my blog, I remember thinking, “Why would someone take the time to write something so nasty? I don’t get it.”

I literally couldn’t understand, because NEVER in a MILLION years, would I EVER write something cruel or mean on someone else’s page/post/profile. What’s the point?

It’s actually a common topic that comes up when you’re talking to other bloggers. It’s part of the job, I get it – just like Leo DiCaprio has to deal with paparazzi hounding him, you have to embrace all aspects of your career – good and bad. But that doesn’t change the fact that I am a human being and I have feelings.

Vegan Carrot Dogs with Spiralized Toppings (Four Ways!)

What I’ve realized in my almost third year of blogging is that people who post negative comments are unhappy people. They’re most likely jealous of your own success or excitement and need to make themselves feel better by pouring some water on your fire. Or, their parents never taught them how to be kind to others.

It’s just so disappointing. I was SO excited about this recipe and it tastes SO delicious and it literally blew my mind, so I shared a teaser on Instagram. I saw the comments flow through…. many were just as amped as I was about the recipe.

But then, there were others who were, well, LESS excited.

One person (I see you @mjmjmj32) even suggested that I should be thrown out of a barbecue if I was to bring the carrot dog. Actually the comment including profanity and I was told: “Don’t you put a damn carrot in a hot dog bun and try to call it a hot dog. This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen and it has made me irrationally angry.”

Wow. In my heart, I feel really, really bad for this person. I wish their heart could be filled with kindness and love, instead of hatred and negativity. I truly do.

Thankfully, my loyal followers chimed in and stood up for me (I love when that happens – you guys are the best.) I even saw my mother commented on my Instagram, applauding the recipe idea and called them healthy “not dogs.” Haha, gotta love Moms.

I even texted Lu a photo of the dogs and just to preface – my husband LOVES meat, including hot dogs. His positive response was what made me stop reading through the comments and move about my day.

Screen Shot 2016-03-21 at 3.03.15 PM

I love that man.

Anyway, I just thought I’d clear the air. I think it’s okay to stand up for yourself and your blog every once in a while. I mean, if I reacted to every single negative comment or e-mail I received, I’d drive myself crazy, but when something like this happens, I think it’s perfectly normal to respond.

I just pray that one day, if I’m blessed enough to have children, that they never experience this kind of bullying and negativity on social media. Because I will rain down. Never mess with an Italian girl – especially one from Jersey! 🙂

But no more wasted energy on that. #hatersgonnahate

Now, on to what you all came here for today: VEGAN CARROT DOGS WITH SPIRALIZED TOPPINGS.

Vegan Carrot Dogs with Spiralized Toppings (Three Ways!)

First thing’s first: these dogs. As a disclaimer, they were not my original idea. My friend Alyssa from Simply Quinoa mentioned that she saw them pop up in some vegan forum online and she was intrigued. Clearly, so was I! I randomly saw them again recently and I put everything down to try this out myself.

MIND. SERIOUSLY. BLOWN.

I haven’t eaten a hot dog for almost 10 years (I personally can’t bring myself to eat one, but I totally don’t judge if someone digs ’em – my husband does and most people do). So when grill season comes around, I always feel somewhat left out – because hot dogs just look fun to eat with all their toppings!

So when I saw these pop up, I knew this would change my summer barbecue game forEVER. I seriously can’t wait until summer hits, because I’m going to bring these pre-made and then just have whoever is grilling heat them up for a few minutes.

Vegan Carrot Dogs with Spiralized Toppings (Three Ways!)

They’re really, really easy to make – you just marinate the carrots, roast them, and then pop them into a healthy hot dog bun (I like these vegan ones by Rudy’s Organics) and top with desired toppings! And another way to make these is to boil the carrots until fork tender and then sear them in a skillet with flavorings. Either way, they’re DA BOMB.

Here are the flavors I decided to go with, all starting with a carrot dog and spiralized and caramelized onions:

The Classic

Yes, I spiralized PICKLES. If you’re not the most adventurous of eaters or you just prefer a classic ‘dog, then this one’s for you.

Vegan Carrot Dogs with Spiralized Toppings (Three Ways!)

The Basic Dog

Pretty much, the Classic Dog without pickles and with ketchup. I don’t get people who like ketchup with their hot dogs, but I understand that it’s a thing. If you like the ketchup-mustard combo, try this!

Vegan Carrot Dogs with Spiralized Toppings (Three Ways!)

The Chili Cheese Dog

Okay, so there’s no chili here, but there’s a chipotle cheese sauce, jalapenos and avocado, all things you may find in a chili! If you like it spicy, this is the ‘dog for you.

Vegan Carrot Dogs with Spiralized Toppings (Three Ways!)

The Hawaiian Dog

If you’re a lover of teriyaki sauce and Asian condiments, this ‘dog’s calling your name. It has sweet small-diced pineapple, scallions, and is topped off with red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.

Nutritional Information & Recipe

For the carrot dog itself:

Vegan Carrot Dogs

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes
Servings 4

Ingredients

  • 4 thick carrots
  • 2 tablespoons liquid smoke I used hickory flavor, but you can use anyone you'd prefer
  • 2 tablespoons reduced sodium tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Peel the carrots. For true hot dog resemblance, when peeling, round the edges (like a hot dog.)
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the liquid smoke, soy sauce, maple syrup, onion and garlic powder. Place the carrots in a shallow baking dish and pour over the liquid mixture. If you have the time, cover and let them marinate for at least 2 hours. If not, that’s okay, just roll the carrots around in the mixture, using your fingertips to massage the marinade into the carrots. When the carrots are coated in the mixture, season with pepper and transfer to the baking sheet. Roast for 35 minutes or until fork tender. Every five minutes, brush the carrots with the remaining marinade mixture.
  • Once your carrot dog is done, place it into a hot dog bun and top it with your favorite hot dog toppings.

For the Hawaiian Dog:

1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
1 cup spiralized white or red onion (about ¼ of a medium onion, Blade A)
½ cup diced pineapple
2 tablespoons teriyaki sauce (I like Tessemae’s)
salt and pepper
1 carrot dog (see recipe above)
1 hot dog bun (I used Rudi’s vegan hot dog buns)
1 pinch red pepper flakes
1 scallion, diced, green parts only

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once oil is shimmering, add the onion and cook for 5-10 minutes or until mostly wilted and starting to brown. Season with salt and pepper. If needed, add water or vegetable broth to the pan to keep the onions from sticking to the pan.

Add the pineapple and teriyaki sauce to the skillet and cook for 2 minutes or until pineapple is heated through.

Place the carrot dog in the hot dog bun and top with pineapple mixture. Garnish with red pepper flakes and scallions.

For the Classic Dog:

1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
1 cup spiralized white or red onion (about ¼ of a medium onion, Blade A)
salt and pepper
1 large Kosher pickle
1 carrot dog
1 hot dog bun
mustard

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once oil is shimmering, add the onion and cook for 5-10 minutes or until mostly wilted and starting to brown. Season with salt and pepper. If needed, add water or vegetable broth to the pan to keep the onions from sticking to the pan.

Meanwhile, spiralize the pickle with Blade D. Set aside about ¼ cup pickle noodles and reserve the rest for future use in the refrigerator.

Place a carrot dog in a hot dug bun and top with pickles, onions, and drizzle with mustard.

For the Basic Dog:

1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
1 cup spiralized white or red onion (about ¼ of a medium onion, Blade A)
salt and pepper
1 carrot dog
1 hot dog bun
mustard
ketchup

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once oil is shimmering, add the onion and cook for 5-10 minutes or until mostly wilted and starting to brown. Season with salt and pepper. If needed, add water or vegetable broth to the pan to keep the onions from sticking to the pan.

Place a carrot dog in a hot dug bun and top with onions, and drizzle with mustard and ketchup.

For the Chili Cheese Dog:

1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
1 cup spiralized white or red onion (about ¼ of a medium onion, Blade A)
salt and pepper
1 carrot dog (see recipe above)
1 hot dog bun
¼ cup cubed avocado (about ¼ avocado)
3 thin slices of jalapeno

For the cheese sauce*:
2/3 cups vegetable broth
1/2 cup raw cashews, soaked for at least 2 hours, drained
1 chipotle chile in adobo sauce, finely chopped
1.5 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 pinch onion powder

*This will make about 1.25 cups of sauce and this recipe is only for one carrot dog, so you will have leftovers.

While the onions cook, add all of the ingredients for the cheese sauce into a high speed blender and process until creamy. Taste and adjust if necessary. Transfer the sauce into a small pot over medium heat and let heat up, about 3 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and keep warm until onions are ready.

Place a carrot dog in a hot dug bun and top with about ¼ cup of cheese sauce, then avocado, jalapenos, and scallions.

  • These look amazing and what a well said post! Never let anyone tear you down. You can only do you and we love you for it! Thanks for another great recipe. :)
  • These look like so much fun! Great option for vegan and veggie friends. Love your positivity xx
  • Lady, I'm always willing to come to your defense. Unfortunately, I didn't see the instagram comments or I would have! you're an amazing person and you work REALLY REALLY hard and you shouldn't let people tear you down. they're the worst. its something I'm working on too, so I'm sending you TONS of emotional support & HUGS. P.S. I switched to the inspiralizer from my beloved paderno and was very scared... but I LOVE it. you designed a kick-a$$ spiralizer gurl, so the haters can suck it.
  • Welcome to the anti-vegan comments world. So strange how sharing something so beautiful like you do, made with vegetables, can inspire such ugliness. I see this all the time on my vegan group pages. Non-vegans seems to be so threatened when you share another way of eating. Honestly I believe the anger comes from the fact that it makes them take a look at what they're really eating and the cruelty behind it. I'm just not sure how eating animal body parts isn't gross but eating a carrot in a bun is. I will never understand that. And I will never understand who these people are that have no problem writing nasty things on someone's page while hiding behind their keyboards. It's just unthinkable to me.
    • "Non-vegans seem to be so threatened when you share another way of eating."...OUCH!:(
    • I couldn't agree with you more Laura. The nastiness that some meat-eaters spew at vegans is beyond belief. I do believe that our lifestyle threatens so much that they hold dear, mostly their choice to consume animal products. We expose truths that they don't want to have to consider because then they might have to become less complacent and actually make changes. I know there are also angry vegans but most of us are pretty peaceful folks who don't deserve that sort of backlash for trying to do the right thing. The fact that someone would go off on a carrot in a bun is beyond bizarre though... :)
    • Perhaps if things were called by another name as they are totally a different thing. If you had a group of musicians playing a concert calling themselves the Rolling Stones when they are clearly not the Rolling Stones, that would actually require legal action! If it's not a hot dog don't call it a hot dog! Give it its own fabulous name and those apparently cruel meal eaters (like me) might not get so mad. There are some nasty ingredients in those cheap hot dogs so I would stay away from labelling these in that category anyway.
  • NOT DOGS!!! :-). Best comment!!! LOL. I LOVE IT.
  • Haters gonna hate! BUT you know you're above all that and a WILD SUCCESS! I have to admit, I was a little hesitant about these, but that marinade? Gahhhh need to make them!!
  • Say nice things or dont say anything at all is lost of many people! I guess that calling them "hot dogs" could be seen as lighting the touch paper. I must admit it bugs me a little when something is called something it's not. If it's new and fabulous give it its own name, it deserves it! I think you mum has it down, call them "not dogs"- awesome name!
    • It's the same struggle with "zucchini pasta" people say, "It's not pasta! Don't call it that" --- but to me, it's pasta. Same thing with these carrot dogs!
  • I'm probably the only one in my house who would eat these. They look awesome! If I made four at once, do these keep as leftovers? How would I reheat them?
  • so excited to try these! I don't see the ingredients though for the hawaiian dog
  • These look amazing. We can't wait to try them in our house. We're eating a mostly plant-based diet these days and get so excited for new things to try. Thanks for making our morning!
  • I'm so sad to hear that the nastiness of social media got to you, but I'm happy you are taking a stand and calling them out. I love regular hot dogs but I think these look amazing and I'm going to make them for the family! I think my 13 year old son will especially love them since he loves fruits and veggies. Thank you for sharing your creative ideas and for staying true to who you are despite the haters. You rock!
  • Already told my husband when he wants a brat in the summer this is what I will be making for myself! Can't wait to try it...Especially the chili cheese dog!!! (And...yes, I will be eating the classic option with the addition of ketchup because I am that weird person from Chicago that actually puts ketchup on their hot dogs)
  • I have to admit, when I saw this pop up on instagram yesterday I thought: "Wait, it's just a carrot on a bun, that's not a hot dog." BUT rather than commenting, I figured I'd wait for the blog post and see what the carrot dogs are about before commenting (plus, if you don't have something nice to say...), and I'm glad I did because now I'm totally intrigued! The marinade sounds great. Thanks for going forward with the blog post. Keep up the creative work!
    • Same here! after seeing the recipe this morning I cant help but try for a tuesday night dinner!
  • These look amazing! I cannot wait until our annual family cookout on Memorial Day. Making these!! Of course, I must try these before hand - any excuse will do - just so I get to eat one very soon. :-:)
  • Dear Ali: I don't do Instagram or I would have written a supportive comment also. To reiterate everyone else, ignore the haters. Social media makes people feel they are allowed to make any comment, it's not face to face so - why say "something nice or nothing at all" like you would in person? *If* their parents even taught them that golden rule, as you said. Anyway, back to the important stuff like --carrot "hot dogs"! WOW I can't wait to try it! I don't eat hot dogs, any kind, even turkey, ew yuck gross fillers and who knows *what* meat is in them, even if it says "beef" .... (No offense to people who eat them. Enjoy. I am not vegetarian or vegan but support those who make that choice). I don't like raw carrots but I love roasting them until they're soft and carmelized...mmmmm never thought of topping them like hot dogs - what a great idea!! Keep up the great work! I too love "Not Dogs" for the name, haha! Love your recipes. :)
  • People are rude. If a simple CARROT can make someone "irrationally angry", then they have much bigger issues they are dealing with and that is sad. I think these look great! And I agree with your mom- you should call them Not Dogs! I'm a "flexitarian", meaning I don't eat meat 85% of the time, leaving the other 15% of the time for when I just can't resist bacon. People give me crazy looks when I try to explain why I "flex" and eat meat sometimes, but it works for me! I will definitely try these- Thanks Ali! I love everything Inspiralized!!
  • I'm always a fan of your recipes over the past few year and this one was no different. I was looking forward to seeing what the recipe actually was and now it sounds delicious. I'm not vegan but sometimes get grossed out by hot dogs and I'm so excited to try this. You are awesome and should never let anyone make you feel less than that!!!
  • I think carrot hotdogs are the coolest idea I've seen in a really long time. We just moved to England and are having a terrible time finding decent hot dogs for my son who misses them. I'm wondering if I can slip some of these hotdogs to him and have him not notice!
  • Ali- I am a lover of hot dogs, although I haven't eaten one since July 8th, when I began my fitness and nutrition journey. While I really only ate them in the summer, I loved eating them at barbecues, and honestly, if I was on my way to the electric chair, they would be a part of my last meal! That being said, I was intrigued by the tease yesterday and not sure what to make of it, but was pretty sure you wouldn't just put a raw carrot on a bun and call it a hot dog! I never understand the haters on social media! If you don't like the content of the person you follow, just stop following them! There really is just too much negativity in the world! Keep doing your thing and realize that you'll never please everyone! I enjoy your blog and your posts on social media. Keep working for and inspiring people like me, who see the value in what you do, and let go of the rest! Oh, and by the way, I look forward to trying out this NOT dog. If you can make this hot dog lover a believer, then you've done your job!
  • Just chiming in with more support! Not vegan, somewhere near it, but I have NEVER liked hot dogs, even as a little kid meat=eater. I've even tried vegan ones but honestly, the texture is such a turn off, I can't eat those either. I LOVE the term "not dogs!" It's perfect! I've always subbed a pickle for a hot dog (weird, I know, don't care, I'm 33 and still love it) but this is such a great spin, I'm definitely doing this over the summer. I'm going to miss when vegan month ends!
  • I love the look of these - I'm not vegan or even vegetarian but I love getting more veg in my diet as well as eating healthier :) If I''m gonna have a hot dog I buy the chicken dogs from Muscle Food - no nasties in them :) Can't believe some people - too much aggression & negativity in the world so well done you for not letting them annoy you! As my mum always told me "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything" too many keyboard warriors around these days...they'd never be so rude face to face! Anyhoo...I look forward to trying these...summer or not! Might make them over the weekend! Thank you for all your amazing recipes :D
  • I saw a similar suggestion a few years ago, but never tried it. Your version, with the yummy toppings, proves it's not all about that base. Thanks!
  • Oh, and just a little add on to my previous post...although I love my hot dogs, when I really think about it, I think maybe it is all of the condiments that I really love. This may wind up being right up my alley, after all!
  • Just read your latest entry, and while I'm a loyal reader and user of the Inspiralizer, I don't often comment, but felt compelled to after reading your post. How disappointing is it that as human beings we can celebrate all the good, instead people take pleasure out of being cruel because of their own self hatred. So sad. I, for one, will be making the roasted "not dog" dog ASAP because that marinade sounds too good to pass up! Thank you for sharing.
    • You're so sweet! Thank you for the kindness, Trish!
  • I actually really like hot dogs (I think it's all the great toppings), but I can't eat them because of the bread. So, when I saw this yesterday I was totally jealous of anyone who can eat bread because they get to try them out!
    • We will be eating them with gluten free buns. :)
  • I actually find these very unexpected and funny idea for someone who doesn't eat meat and is at a barbecue with friends. Is a way of making everyone welcome even if you don't eat meat (like me). Loved this post :)
  • Great post. You and your mom are the best. Love this idea and looking forward to trying it. I've felt a little left out when people are grilling hot dogs, too. Now I will have "not dogs" to grill, and top. Thanks
  • There used to be a hot dog place where I grew up. When my mom had a project for us around the house she would bribe us with hot dogs and fries from Little Louie's. (She was a healthy eater and so junk food was a bribe? I know!) Have to say it was all about the bun, and the ton of toppings, (hot peppers, anyone?) So every once in awhile I do get a craving. But the thought of eating an actual hot dog...hmm no. Can't wait to try this. FYI I tried another recipe that was also very good and simple. Smother a carrot in miso and butter, wrap in foil and roast in the oven. Was quite yummy and now I could add all those great toppings you have in your recipes!
  • These look and sound delicious - and I am NOT vegan. And the spiralized pickles??!! I am soooooo going to try that :)
  • I am so sorry someone was so rude! You hit the nail on the head when you said it is something within them. What is inside of us spills out! I LOVE your idea and am totally going to try it!!! So much healthier than a processed hot dog. I am planting some purple carrots this year and I would be DELIGHTED if they grew big enough to do this!!! Thank you for sharing this recipe!!! Can't wait to try it. Keep on keepin on girl!!!
  • Ali: Unfortunately, jealousy, envy, and spite just rule with some people, and they seem to get worse and feel unrestrained on the internet-and most of us don't understand this so you aren't alone. I think you handled it well. "Not Dogs" are very inventive-your mom nailed the name, and you should go with that-after all, "Mother Knows Best," and I'd never thought of spiralizing a pickle-but then I never buy whole ones. My first thought was maybe I could do this with a butternut squash stick, but then you mentioned as an alternate method that you could boil the carrot and then put the seasonings in the skillet with them and sear them, and that would enable me to try them. I have been on a low oxalate diet for medical reasons for several years, and carrots are high, as are many of the veggies and spices you use, but I can sometimes swap and work around it. I can have a small amount of boiled and drained carrots, becauseI that removes at least some of the oxalates. I really like them better raw, but that's out. Thanks for mentioning this second cooking option. (They do sound better roasted and marinated, and maybe someday, I can try a smaller carrot that way. It's great that you added all of the different recipes, and I am one of those twisted people who does like ketchup on my hot dog-sometimes, and I do eat hot dogs once in a while. I may only be able to eat one "Not Dog" at a time, but I am going to try it. I don't know that it would work with butternut squash, might be too mushy, but there might be other low-oxalate veggies out there that it would work with. Thanks for all you do and all your creative ideas. I do love my Inspiralizer. I'm not on Instagram, so I haven't seen the new cover, please post it here.
  • You're right - #hatersgonnahate. Look at it this way - the more haters you collect, the more you're doing right. Love what you're doing with your blog and my mind has been blown with these "not dogs". I'm already planning when I should make them! Keep doing you! xo Annie www.laircake.com
  • Yeah, I don't get the mean people. I actually removed the ability to leave comments from my blog. It makes me wonder, do these people confront people in person in the same manner as they can anonymously? Must make for some interesting observations... Anyway, I can't wait to make these!!! I grilled a tofu dog last Sunday, and while it was ok, I certainly am in no hurry to grill another. These, however, have me drooling!
  • Haters, will be haters. You have a wonderful attitude, I love all your recipes. This sounds so yummy. Can't wait to try one.
  • BRAVO! Thinking outside the box makes for exciting eating. Haven't tried them yet as I'm trying not to eat gluten but, I think that this can be adapted in some manner. As a mom, I'd be pretty darned proud of you if you were mine! Thinking of it...I'm pretty darned proud of you anyway! Keep up the heart-based work! The world needs you!
    • You're so sweet - and I'm sure my mother read this comment and loved it! :)
  • What fun! I also have not been able to make myself eat hot dogs since i found out what is in them. I make a "mole" veggie chili which would be an awesome topping. Thanks for the idea!
  • Oh dear, as someone who buys carrots in bulk at Costco AT LEAST once a week, these are calling my name in the best way. And the spiralized pickle?!!? Genius! Thanks for what you do!
  • These look absolutely amazing! Definitely will be trying these out! Once I do, I'll post a POSITIVE and amazing review for you on my Instagram (@amybethbolden) with all my vegan recipes. For the one bad comment you got, you have a while army of people behind you supporting you!
  • YUM! I had my first "carrot" dog at a small hot dog stand outside of Charleston, SC, where as a vegan, I fully expected to have to order a bun with tomato, ketchup and mustard. Low and behold, they had a carrot dog AND a vegan hot dog on the menu. I said to my friend's father who I was with at the time "I appreciate a place that has good vegan options!" He replied: "I appreciate a vegan who isn't a pain the a**." Can't wait to try this. Hater's gonna hate hate hate hate hate...
  • Sorry people were so rude about this recipe. I personally cannot do "real" hot dogs because they gross me out. These not dogs, however, are a totally different story!! I am so excited to try them out!! Plus a healthy "hot dog" means I can have more delicious sides and beverages right??! ;)
    • Totally! It's all about that moderation! Thanks for your kind comment.
  • These look amazing and I def will try since I'm not too keen on regular hot dogs. One question, what is liquid smoke and where do you find it? Just curious . . . And may I add kudos to you for sticking up for yourself! Those negative comments are totally uncalled for and from people who have nothing better to do than put others down. I think you are amazing!
  • OK, these may have looked a little silly at first glance, but now that I have read through your post, I am totally intrigued! The Vegan Hawaiian dog sounds totally delicious and I think it would be fun to try something different. You know what Taylor says "haters gonna hate." It certainly sounds like you rose above it - it's clearly her problem, not yours. Have a wonderful day!
  • Whoa....wait, wait, wait.......you can spiralize PICKLES! ? ! ? OMG!!!! I can't wait to try this. I love your blog and all of your recipes!
  • I've always wondered why people have to say something. When you post a recipe that I don't want to make and/or have ingredients I don't like I move on and wait for the next one to come out. No need to hate. I'm not a vegan but I haven't eaten hot dogs since middle school and this sounds like fun alternative.
  • Have you tried poking little holes in the carrots so the marinade soaked in?
  • Not a vegan, but always looking for interesting new recipes to try. I'm going to go for this NOT dog this weekend!!! Thanks for sharing!
  • I've been eating these carrot dogs for about a year now. LOVE THEM!! Cooked carrots, in addition to having more nutrition than raw carrots, also taste a little sweeter. Plus my local Mexican store has very low cost large, fat carrots that are like very thick, large, fat frankfurters and are perfect for the Vegan Carrot Dogs. I don't do the buns though but that's okay. I even use pickling spice to make them into a Sauerbraten Dog as well with sauerkraut on top. Also, since I don't do Instagram or Twitter, I also get to miss the nastiness. And that's just one of the reasons I don't do either one of them.
  • Ali, what a BRILLIANT idea!!! Seriously, I don't know how you think of all this awesome, beautiful vegetable inspired dishes!!! Good on ya! (And, seriously, "boo" to all the naysayers and haters out there. Hey folks, if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all!) I never in a bajillion years would have thought to use carrots this way!!! Can't wait to try these!!!! Great job!!! You ROCK, Ali! You ROCK!!!! BIG HUGS!!! :) <3
  • Ugh! I wish more people would follow the "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" rule. That said, I think these dogs look awesome! A plain carrot on a bun, no thanks, but your jazzed up version with all the awesome toppings -- come to mama! :) I want to try all four, but the Hawaiian dog is really talking to me.
  • Hi Ali, Thank you so much for this recipe!! I made it today, with a few changes :) Its currently marinating and I can't wait for my family to give it a try! Im so sorry to hear about all the negativity on Instagram. Its such a shame that people act this way over a creative idea. I applaud you for using real whole food ingredients!! People should protest over the hot dogs they sell at the supermarket thats filled with additives and chemicals. Thank you, again!! Xoxo I can't wait to see more creative and fun ideas from you!!
  • I just have to say, "Thank You" for this recipe. I'm a true follower and always looking for new ways to cook vegan. See my husband is a vegan, a choice he made after suffering a heart attack and I'm always looking for new recipes to cook for him to change the menu up. It was the reason for me purchasing the Inspiralizer and what a difference it has made in our lives (I don't eat meat, but do eat dairy and seafood). I'm now going to purchase one for my Mom and share with her some of these recipes. I'm excited to show her how she can mix it up with different vegetables. Anyway, I wanted to reach out after reading about the negative comments. Keep doing what you are doing, you do change people's lives and are a positive influence.
  • Wow...this is SO So clever......don't give the mean bloggers another thought! There will ALWAYS be people like that. Too many other people adore your recipes, including me!!! Now my only problem is figuring out a bun since I don't eat wheat......
    • I just cover them with the condiments and use a knife and fork. I don't eat wheat either but you could also use a flax seed wrapper or even a lettuce wrap to hold it all together if you wanted more of a hand-held food item. I use sliced large Korean Daikon radishes as tortilla substitutes so they would work on this as well but you have to slice them very thin. They aren't readily available except in oriental grocery stores or sections of larger towns that have a population that uses them. Sometimes I just eat them by themselves without any condiments because I like them as a spicy cooked carrot. But I'm weird.
    • Check out the gluten free freezer section in your grocery store. Udi's makes all kinds of bread, rolls, bagels that are delicious! Also trader joes has a great selection.
      • Gluten free is not the same because all they do is substitute rice flour and other high carb flours that cause me major problems. But thanks for trying to help. I do not miss bread, I'd rather have less glycation in my body for better health and kidneys.
  • I love everything about this! I can't wait to try it- I can't get over the outrage some people had over this! People are always going to have something negative to say when they aren't open minded. I think this is creative and fun, I'd definitely let you at my BBQ for sure!!! :-)
  • Wow! I just made this for dinner tonight. Spot on! Thank you for another great recipe!!!
  • So obsessed with these!! I've seen carrot dogs floating around the Internet, but spiralized toppings make everything more fun. :) Plus these flavor combos are bomb!! Good for you for standing up for yourself. Some people just don't have anything better to do than to criticize others - it's sad. At least you know that you're happy, healthy, successful, and loved. Keep it up, Ali!
  • Ugh, screw the haters!! Some people are so bored I swear. I'd never heard of this idea until I saw your Instagram post and I was like WOAH so innovative haha. I'm sure they are as delicious as they look!! <3
  • Ali, I absolutely love your blog and have been inspired by you and your recipes for a little over a year. Before you came out with your own inspiralizer I bought one off of Amazon since your recipes looked so healthy and delicious. I saw this post on instagram and my mouth started watering. I had no IDEA that people would ever write negative comments about a carrot dog...I mean, c'mon! Why waste the time on a CARROT DOG? You have such a good perspective on this incident and I applaud you for sticking up for yourself and being open about how these comments make you feel. You have so many supporters and people who love your recipes/blog. I rarely write comments on blogs, but I feel strongly about sending positive energy into the world. I think what you've done (essentially built up an empire for yourself) is so admirable. I look up to women like you. Keep on keepin' on :)
  • Oh my gosh I could not believe some of the comments on your instagram post. It's so sad how easily people throw mean and negative comments out on social media with no regard for how it might make others feel. I truly don't get it. The people commenting that they were "offended" by the post of the carrot dog was pretty humorous though. How on earth is a carrot dog in any way offensive?! So silly. You have a great attitude and I really admire you realness. I hope the negativity from a few people who clearly have no lives won't deter you from continuing to be creative and innovative in the kitchen! I'm not vegan but I've been loving these recipes and can't wait to try the controversial carrot dog!
  • These are brilliant! I saw these on Instagram and COULD NOT WAIT to jump over to the blog for the recipe! Thank you for making vegetables fun!! And whether a person is vegan or not, there's always room to think of creative ways to make classic meals more healthful. I applaud you!! AND your carrot dogs!!
  • OK, I'll admit that the carrot dog isn't throwing itself at me, however, the TOPPINGS are. They would be sooo good with say a bratwurst. Thanks for the ideas.
  • Thank you for this inspirational recipe! I can't wait to try it. I might actually get my kids to eat this one!! Sorry for the negativity. I think you are handling it with grace. Good for you for being brave enough to put yourself out there and share your voice.
  • Hey Ali - Just wanted to give you some kudos for addressing this issue and standing up for yourself! I love your recipes and find you to be one of the most creative bloggers that I follow. I think it's so funny - everyone has a different idea of what is "healthy" and what is "terrible for you." Vegan, Paleo, Gluten-Free, Sugar Free, Vegetarian, etc. etc. etc. Different things work for different people and I so appreciate that you work hard to vary your recipes to appeal to everyone. Keep up the good work! Love your recipes and love my inspiralizer!
  • I'm so sorry that you received all that hate on your Instagram account. I feel the same way as you, people who take the time to bring others down are probably not very happy in their own life. You keep being you and know that you are better than those that make nasty comments. (I haven't tried the carrot dog yet but am definitely curious as a hot dog lover!)
  • I loved this instagram tease and tagged my 18 year old son. He invented carrot dogs on a boy scout campout years ago when he was not eating meat. He is still good-naturedly teased about eating carrot dogs. It was fun to show him that it's actually a "thing", posted by a famous food-blogger! We are going to try your loaded versions at our next bbq!
  • These sound fantastic Ali!!! I can't wait to tell my vegetarian niece about these. Great idea to go with portobello mushroom burgers.
  • Cant wait to try this. My daughter has recently decided to be vegetarian, and I am looking for recipes to support her decision. These look so fun.
  • Ali you make the best out of vegetables ! Can wait to make this recipe , don't let those negative comments to disturb your creativity!
  • Before I read the article and ingredients I thought these were some sort of veggie in a casing of something. These are freaking carrots!!!! Ali! You are amazing and inspiralize me every time something comes from you into my inbox. Thank you for your heart and passion and being YOU!
  • I don't understand the mean spirited and ugly comments either, I'm sorry you had to experience that. I've only had a carrot dog once, at Fritzi Dog here at Farmers Market in Los Angeles and it was yummy! We're vegetarian and I can't wait to try your versions. Thanks so much for the recipes!
  • Whoa I love roasted veggies but never thought to try like this. Excited to find something alkaline friendly and fun! I got a great perspective from someone recently who told me that the stuff that anyone is bringing at you is data or information about them, not you. Negativity, disappointment whatever. I think your recipes rock!
  • I follow you on instagram (both of your accounts) and also your blog. So I get updates from you quite often. I don't think I have ever commented though. However, based on how your carrot dogs almost broke the internet I do feel like I should comment. When I first saw them I was thinking to myself, those don't look good. But I would NEVER post anything negative because it's not beneficial to anyone. Then I read the blog post and recipe and I started to think these might be kind of good. I still wasn't going to post a comment. You hit the nail on the head, people that leave negative, ugly comments are not happy and were clearly never given home training. You are very generous with your time and recipes, I pay nothing but my time to see all of your recipes and ideas and I thank you for that.
  • My daughter and I are going to serve these at my granddaughters baby shower! It's a healthy farm theme and these are going to be a hit for sure! Thanks!
  • Tried tonight and loved! Even my husband liked. Even though we are both meat eaters, this was a great substitute for hot dogs and so much healthier!! Thank you.
  • I'll have to give these a shot one of these days! I, like you, just cannot cuddle up to the idea of eating a hot dog. My husband (and his whole family, for that matter) loves them...so we'll have to use this recipe for me and make everyone at family campouts get jealous ;) As for the negative comments, glad to see you grow through having a bunch of nastiness placed at your door and come out stronger. I saw the post on Instagram and was intrigued by it but I stopped reading the comments after seeing some negative back and forth -- it's not worth any of our time. Keep posting, keep thinking creatively -- your kitchen is a safe place and only you get to decide if those Instagramers enter that space. Aren't you glad for husbands that rock and are super supportive of your new ideas? I know the feeling :)
  • I have made these twice since this has been posted! That's twice in less than a week. So good even my hunter boyfriend is all over them. These carrot dogs are the bomb! I did cut back on the liquid smoke, only need maybe half, otherwise I think it's a waste, you're not going to get any more smoke flavour by adding more. Just subbed water for the other tbsp. Toronto is just recovering from an ice storm but it's sunny out today and even though it's only 7°C I swear I smell a bbq from a neighbours... makes me want more inspiralized carrot dogs!!!
  • I bet it would be delicious to actually spiralize the carrots (vs keeping them whole) in the sauce and then fry them or bake them up and put them on top of a salad! Thanks for the idea and recipes :) They all sound delicious to me!
  • My husband and I both have had heart incidents in the last 4 months and are watching our salt intake. This means no hotdogs for either of us. I am going to try these carrot hot dogs, but need to eliminate some salt from the marinade. Can I do without the liquid smoke and just use less of the lower salt soy sauce. I thought I would put them on the grill for a short time after roasting to get a little smoke flavor. ps: since zucchini noodles are called zoodles, are pickle noodles called poodles; and then are they still vegetarian? pps: sorry some people were mean to you on your blog. Can I call them pickle pusses? (No offense intended to cats anywhere) Hope the ps: and the pps: made you smile a little brighter today! I am a big fan of you and your cookbook. I keep waiting for my spiralizer to break so I can buy an Inspiralizer, but the stupid thing is German-made and very strong! I'll just have to keep accidentally dropping it on my tile floor.
    • My husband actually liked them!
    • Try using liquid aminos instead of soy sauce! Lower sodium :) that's all we buy now.
      • Eek sorry, I just realized I said the wrong thing in my previous comment. I called it liquid aminos, instead of what I meant to say...COCONUT aminos. Liquid aminos are something sort of similar to soy sauce, but made through a very cheap, unsafe process, usually sold by the company Braggs, and are not lower in sodium. Coconut aminos, on the other hand, ARE a lower sodium option. They are a true better option for soy sauce. Sorry for the ( near) mixup!
  • I loathe carrots... really, I hate them. But this actually has me wanting to try it! Since it is coming into BBQ seaon I am looking forward to whipping this up for a "by the pool" dinner for us and the kiddos. Thanks for posting this recipe!!
  • You inspire us to be more creative with our meals, please don't spend a second on the negative comments. I am a newbie to your blog and I tell you not only am I loving your ideas but my family is truly benefitting as well. I absolutely love the idea of carrot hot dogs. Anything unique and healthy, obviously we are all looking for otherwise why would we be searching these blogs? And thank you for such interesting posts and fantastic meal ideas.
  • I've been vegan for a number of years but I have never made the carrot dog. I've seen it all over the place and is a specialty of the Happy Herbivore. I just have no idea why I haven't given them a try. I'm so happy to be on a blog that isn't directed towards vegans and see the carrot dog being promoted (along with vegan toppings). Kudos to you!!!! I have some nice sized carrots in the crisper and I'll give them a shot for the BBQ on Memorial Day!
  • Thank you for the carrot dog recipe. I plan to make them this weekend. I'm thinking about leaving out the maple syrup, because I don't want to buy it just for one recipe. Do you think the sweetness of the carrot itself might be enough, or do you think the maple syrup is important? Thank you.
  • Holy carrots, Batman. These are so good! My family is a meat and hot dog loving family but we loved these! My 10 year old ate her whole Not Dog (borrowed the name from your mom!), took a bite of regular hot dog, spit it out, and said, "That's gross." Score!! :) Thanks for this recipe! We are having them again this Memorial Day weekend!
    • Haha! This is so great to hear, Emily! Thank you for sharing with us. It's so great to hear that your family approves. That is a major score!
  • These were delicious! I want to add that I put the carrot dogs in a foil packet and put them on the grill while the rest of the family's meat was grilled, saves the step of basting every 5" in the oven. Foil packet would also work in the oven.
    • We're so happy to hear you liked these! Thanks for sharing your tip!
  • I never thought I could eat a hot dog again so I am loving this! I am what I call a "reluctant" vegetarian because my gout is so bad and I don't want to take medicine unless I have to. I want to thank you for coming up with this "hot dog" recipe (which looks easy and delicious) and to tell you not to get upset by idiot people who are "irrational." You are doing a great thing for vegetarians, reluctant vegetarians and people who just like vegetables. Thanks and looking forward to many more recipes and techniques of yours.
  • Hey Ali! Would it be possible to marinate these overnight or do you think that would make them too soft and/or flavorful?? Also, this goes with another post but you should try out Jamie Oliver's roast chicken in milk. It sounds weird and is very decadant but always comes out AMAZING for special occasions at home. Also also, I've been really loving the AllisandraB. Instagram and blog, especially your latest post. You're such an inspiration, thank you!
  • So sad to hear about the bashing and all the negativity. This era really has acceptance, appreciation issues. No wonder we live in a hate-filled world. Thanks for sharing this. I don't see anything wrong calling it hot dog.
    • Thank you for the support! It means a lot to us!
  • Can't wait to try these! What's funny is, my husband and I visited a top vegan restaurant in Philly where one of our small plates was marinated carrots. My husband (who eats meat) bit into one and exclaimed "OMG it tastes just like a hot dog this is amazing!" I was mortified, thinking the vegan chef wouldn't really be pleased hearing that his carrots taste like one of the most processed meats out there, haha, but they were something. So excited to put it all together and try this recipe for a cookout!
  • I, for one, am digging these carrot dogs. Ignore the haters, there's a reason they're simply haters and not successful people like you with a lot of followers wishing you good will and joy.
  • My husband and i absolutely love this recipe! thank you for sharing k was wondering if you had any tips on how to get the carrots softer?
    • Yes -- cook them longer than the 35 minutes in the recipe.
  • Just got your spiralizer and am excited to try it out! Ever thought about making a spiralized veggie bun, along the lines of the spiralized burger bun?
  • Don't let those nasty comments bring you down. A food truck in my area sells carrot dogs and they make a killing! I'm so happy to find this recipe and can't wait to try it!
  • This is a great recipe! I tried the carrot dogs last night. I marinated the carrots all day and brushed them with more marinade every time I passed by. For toppings, I spiralized a red onion and then caramelized it in the oven (from your brussels sprouts recipe). I also had chopped up dill pickles and honey mustard. My stepson, a carnivore's carnivore (he orders pizza with steak and bacon), replaced the honey mustard with ketchup. He loved them, as did my husband. I will definitely be making these again. Thank you, Ali! I have made so many great recipes from your site and enjoyed them!
  • Is it possible to make this without liquid smoke? Or can I sub something else for the liquid smoke?
    • You could try a little bit of smoked paprika.
  • I am new to your site, but have already watched a ton of videos and tried a couple of recipes.. I have come to trust you very much.. I do not like hot dogs but your video caught my attention and raised my curiousity.. after watching said video I thought it looked amazing and definitely will try this weekend!
  • That's hilarious, somebody got irrationally angry over a carrot! LOL! Loved the recipe, I added about 1 tsp worcestershire sauce to the marinade.
  • Ali: I tried the carrot dog recipe from "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Cookbook" yesterday as my nephew-in-law is on that. It was good. Their recipe, you boil them, cut them in half lengthwise, brush liquid smoke over them, and then grill them in a panini press, or out on the grill. Today, I finally tried your Carrot Dog, or Not Dog as your mother christened them. I did the recipe as written, too, and I thought it was really good. I am a carnivore, not a vegetarian, or a vegan, and I LIKED it. I will do them again. The people who sent you all of the nasty e-mails? I have to say again that they are nasty-minded, intolerant and ignorant people and karma is just building up on them, waiting to let fly. Thanks for the recipe. As I said before, Not Dogs is a really great name. Listen to your mother! 8D
  • DELICIOUS! Easy to make. I actually marinated carrots in sauce over night because dinner plans changed, maybe that was a good thing? Whatever the case, this was a fantastic invention and I will make this over and over again. Carrot marinade totally made it taste like a hot dog, that plus fried onion, spiralized pickle, ketchup, yum. I adlibed and added stir-fried green lentils for tad protein. Kids and hubby loved it! Thank you!
  • The thought of a carrot dog made me so irrationally angry that I banged my head against the wall and had to be pulled back from jumping out the window. Then I tried them. YUM! Some people boil the carrots until tender, then marinate them over night, then stick them under the boiler.
    • Hi Andrew! Glad you gave it a try!
  • I tried these carrot dogs! My husband really enjoyed the carrot dogs, he said " he wouldn't go back to eating meat hot dogs again. We have been eating a plant based diet for a month. Thank you for an awesome recipe.
    • Hi Janet! Great to hear - glad you are enjoying!
  • I can’t wait to try these carrot dogs. For your information we have sold your cookbook at our shop in the center of Jerusalem and I love how so many of your new recipes are vegan and have a healthier bend to them. I love getting your new recipes. Question: can you get liquid smoke in Israel? If so, where. I can’t find it, is there an alternative? Chag Sameach.
    • Wow! This is so phenomenal to hear. Thank you for the love and the support. While we do not know of a substitute or brand in Isreal, please let us know if you identify one. We'd love to have that information!
  • I’m not keen on trying this, but I recognize there are those who are. I can’t believe people would be so rude. Thank you for putting this out there. It’s nice to see different and creative recipes to help those who have dietary restrictions. I look forward to seeing more from you! Wishing you all the best.
    • We love to try new things and always want to encourage our readers to do the same! These are amazing!
  • Hi Ali It saddens me so much when folk hide behind the anonymity of the internet - if folk asked themselves would they be so rude to someone if they were stood in front of them and could see the hurt in that persons eyes and the disappointment in their facial experience would they say it - I think most people would think NO I wouldn't. I find you totally inspiring, I love your creativity with food and like you I couldn't go anywhere near a hot dog but this looks fabulous and my vegan nephew is sure to love them. Thank you so much for sharing this and your experience. K xx
    • Awe, we love having you here! We think these will be a big hit with your nephew. Please let us know how it goes! They're fantastic!
  • I don’t get haters either, but who follows you and is offended by this recipe? Clearly people who aren’t paying attention. That’s on them. I love what you do. Thank you
  • Hi Thanks for the recipe, just wondering if this recipe can be done without the liquid smoke.
    • We haven't tried that before but we definitely recommend experimenting. If you give it a try let us know!
