Recipe Creation & Inspiration

On Monday night, I was lucky enough to go with Lu to Marc Forgione’s new steakhouse in TriBeCa called American Cut for a “friends and family” soft opening dinner. Although today’s post isn’t a restaurant review, I could go on and on about how this new restaurant (opening up this Friday, September 27th) is going to be THE best steakhouse in NYC (not only is the food innovative and freakishly delicious, it’s jaw-droppingly gorgeous on the inside).

But really, it’s so different than any other steakhouse out there. When it opens, make a reservation. Get the Batch 22 Shrimp Cocktail and the Carrot Glazed Carrot (it’s enormous!). Would you expect anything less from an Iron Chef?

While I don’t want to spoil it for you, dinner starts off with impeccable service and “everything bagelbiscuits with vegetable cream cheese. Holy moly were they good. Words can’t describe the tastebud experience you will have. I snapped a picture before Lu and I devoured them:

I think Marc knew we were in awe of the biscagels (can that become a thing?) and told us a story behind them. A week prior to the “friends and family” opener, he had a dream that the restaurant was packed one night and a biscuit fight broke out. He woke up, wrote his dream down, and brought the concept to his team that day and he developed the recipe.

Like Marc, when someone asks me “Where does your inspiration come from?”, the answer is everywhere, because when you’re that passionate about what you do, you’ll find inspiration at all times… even while you’re sleeping!

Three months ago today, I quit my job to start this food blog journey. Tomorrow will be the three month anniversary of Inspiralized and in honor of this, I thought I’d take a step back and look at what has inspired me so far.

Here’s a list of where I find most of my inspiration for my recipes, in no specific order:

  • All of my favorite culinary magazines: Bon Appetit (picture above), Food & Wine, Food Network Magazine, Fine Cooking, Eating Well, Cooking Light, Fine Cooking, Vegetarian Times, Saveur, Lucky Peach, EveryDay with Rachael Ray, etc.
  • Food my Italian grandparents made for me while growing up.
  • Other food bloggers’ recipes.
  • Meals I have at restaurants in Jersey City (where I live) or most notably, NYC.
  • Cravings I have (other than chocolate).
  • Traveling to different places and the regional cuisine I taste.
  • Drooling over Foodgawker or Tastespotting.
  • Requests from friends, family and the boyfriend.
  • Flipping through cookbooks at a book store for hours.
  • The seasons and the temperatures and seasonal foods.
  • Walking around the farmer’s market and finding fresh produce or something I’ve never tried before.
  • My fridge and pantry – I never know what I’ll find tucked away.
  • Google.

So, there you have it. Nothing fancy! No dreams yet… perhaps I have to win an Iron Chef competition first for that to happen. Thanks go to Marc Forgione for the inspiration behind this blog post…. and the happy tummy, always
